As intellectual property accounts for approx. 80% of the value of many R&D based companies, patents need to be appraised. Such appraisal may be for accounting, tax, litigation or transactional purposes e.g. company mergers, sales of businesses (which might require valuing several portfolios of patents) and bankruptcy.
Even without the direct commercial need to appraise patents, we recommend to do the exercise of valuation of patents. Patents are valuable assets and you spend significant resources creating and maintaining your patents. Hence the concept of valuation of patents is basically sound and definitely will be a useful learning experience.
